Overview
GERD often manifests as "Heartburn" or in some cases Barrett's Esophagitis.
Conventional medicine often recommends treatment of this condition using various antacids, H2-blockers, and proton-pump inhibitors. Long term use of these treatments can result in vitamin B12 and mineral (calcium, iron, etc.) deficiencies by suppressing the stomach acid necessary to absorb minerals and suppressing the production of "intrinsic factor" necessary to absorb vitamin B12.
Naturopathic treatment of GERD relies on finding and treating the cause, which is most likely a lack of muscle tone of the cardiac sphincter due to insufficient stomach acid, rather than excess stomach acid that is found in Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.
